About
Who Am I?
Growing up, I was conditioned to think you should do well in school so you could either go to college or jump right into a profession. Either way, you worked for the same company (if you were lucky) until you retired. I didn’t know any “entrepreneurs” or business owners, nor did I have any idea how that qualified as a “job”. I believed until fairly recently that entrepreneurs were an alien race of some kind. You had to be born as one and could never become one.
My name is Jeff Jones. I am a 55 year old ex-corporate IT, ex-eBay power-seller who has been working at building my own online business full-time for the last nine years. Yes, you heard that right: nine years. I started my first blog back in 2007 to chronicle my journey while I was finishing up my eBay business.
When I first started, I fell for most products offered up by all the so-called gurus who promised to teach you how to build a successful online business. Consequently, some of the early content in that blog contains ill-advised reviews of products I was sure would work better for somebody else than they did for me.
The thing that has cost me the most was the early success of my eBay business. I was lucky enough to procure a product no longer made that people really wanted. These were mint and near mint classic childrens’ books. I give myself full marks for building the market for them but there was already a huge unmet demand for these things. People will pay a LOT of money to relive a childhood memory, that’s for sure! I thoroughly enjoyed this business until the collection came to a close.
You say “how can success COST you, Jeff?” The answer is simple. You have to grow to succeed. In order to grow, you have to invest in yourself. I wish I could tell you how many times I turned down training because I was waiting for the business to be able to afford it! This is a HUGE mistake a LOT of part-time or “sidepreneurs” make. One I want to keep YOU from making!
In 2012, I finally woke up when my father passed away.
Looking back on my father’s life, I realized he spent it all trying to do what was right, never backing down from his commitments. Noble, yes. However, I couldn’t help but think what a shame it was that he never took the time to dream more.
Just about the time I was feeling bad for him, it hit me.
How is your life any different, Jeff?
The answer: It wasn’t.
I was what Michael Gerber would call a “technician” who was completely buried in my day-to-day tasks. I was the epitome of working IN my business and not ON my business.
I knew I had to make some huge changes if I wanted to have a successful life and business.
I Went “back to school”
Something that is working for me right now is what I like to refer to as my “back to school” method. In order to get myself focused and on the right track, I started…
- A daily reading habit of both fiction and non-fiction to give guidance and inspiration.
- Meditating and visualizing on the success I already have but just need to claim it.
- Listening to podcasts for topics immediately relevant to what I’m working on at the time.
- Becoming a part of a network of successful entrepreneurs and helping and learning from them daily. Any successful entrepreneur will tell you that the relationships are key!
- Finally, investing in myself by paying for training! You DON’T have to drop thousands to start either. The most important part is establishing a habit of self investment. I started with a paid community (Laptop Lifestyle Academy) and have now graduated to a full blown training course from the same person, Yaro Starak.
I’ve finally stopped putting the cart BEFORE the horse and realize you have to pay money FIRST before it pays dividends to you! Don’t make the same mistake I have! No matter how young or old you are NOW is the best time to start and grow your business. No time to fret or kick yourself over what you HAVEN’T done so far. Each day is a blank slate. Let’s make the most of it!
