Are You Sure About That, Jeff?
I know, you say, have you lost your mind, Jeff? Stop editing your work? If you only saw the crap I write first pass, you’d change your mind about that one! But that’s not what I’m talking about here. What I mean is that you should grab an idea and implement it without editing it. I can’t tell you how many great ideas I’ve lost or watered down because I tried to put it before a jury before deciding to just do it! The loss in momentum from that alone can be HUGE!
An Editing Example
For instance, let’s say you’ve decided to do like your favorite blogger does and write first thing before doing anything else. Ok, so you let your email sit while you open up your WordPress editor. You stare at the page and before you write one single word, you decide that process won’t work for you and you start dreaming variations you can employ. Like you decide it’s OK to open your email but not your RSS feeds. WRONG! The only way to test the process is to simply do it the way it was recommended to you. After you’ve done it a week or so, THEN you can look back and examine if it’s working for you in it’s simplest form. Not before you’ve done it.
So, take a deep breath and pick one process you’d like to implement in your business this week and do it in its simplest form without editing it. You’ll be so glad you did when you look back and see how much time you’ve saved by just going through with it. If you need to make an adjustment later, no problem. Just make that adjustment and try that for at least a few days. Then you at least have some data to work with to help you make a decision on whether to continue or change it entirely.
Keep Monkey Mind Out Of It!
The main thing I’m sharing here is not to let your monkey mind keep you from committing to a course of action because you can’t get clear on it. Clarity can come from simple moments of insight but that’s not the usual way we get clear on something. Normally, it’s just starting to do something we haven’t done before and make course corrections along the way. Just make sure you’re making the adjustments AFTER the crude implementation, not before you even start.
We entrepreneurs have enough on our plates without trying to turn our worlds upside-down several times a day by second guessing every single move we make. That’s classic analysis paralysis at work and it will not help us move forward one inch in our business or lives. So, take a breath, look at making a change and just do it! If it doesn’t work like you hoped, nothing’s lost. It’s all good and a learning experience you’ll remember. Just give yourself the benefit of trying before you make any changes to a process.
Is This You?
Does the monkey mind direction shift sound like something that’s gotten you recently? Did you find yourself going from feeling good about a change you want to make to feeling like a total loser because you can’t decide on what to do because you’ve lost confidence in your ability to make any decisions? If this has gotten the best of you, I’d like to hear from you. Leave me a comment below and let’s discuss it!
