We All Have a Super Human Inside
As entrepreneurs, we are on a roller coaster of a ride. Sometimes, we feel completely ineffective; unable to pull off the simplest of tasks. Other times, we feel like we connect with the super human inside. We feel unstoppable and invincible. What I’ve found is these moments usually break down to activities or pursuits we engage in that really resonate with our true selves. You know, that elusive thing that makes time stand still for you and allows you to experience life in a whole other way? When we’re in flow.
For instance, making copies and filing papers at the job you hate probably isn’t the transformative thing that makes you feel whole and like a person you would really want to be with. However, skydiving may invoke this person or persona. When you’re skydiving, you feel like you have complete control of your life and that everything seems so much easier and just makes sense. You step outside of yourself and experience life in a completely different manner than when you’re not skydiving. THIS is the time I’m asking you about.
To use myself as an example, I like how I am when I’ve had a couple of drinks. Now, before you go trashing me because it sounds like I’m in love with the nearly-drunk me, hear me out. When I’ve had just a couple drinks, I’m able to relax my mind and focus on one task at a time instead of the usual barrage of thoughts that are competing for my attention. I’m more calm, logical but I also have just a tad more courage. Again, I’m not talking about stripping and running up and down my street “courage”. No, I mean the kind that can train you to suspend your disbelief and actually see yourself accomplishing a particular thing. I’m not advocating drinking to accomplish your life goals either. I would simply like to know what thing is it you do where you feel more like the person you dream of becoming?
Of course, most of us will have a few of these. For instance, for me it’s when I’m listening to music or singing. Music has always been a very BIG part of my life since I was very young. When I’m listening to something I’m really getting into, I completely forget about my petty worries and woes. It elevates my soul and puts me in a completely different thought mode. No longer are goals simply a succession of tasks that lead to a desired outcome. In that moment, goals become things that need to measure up against the person I’ve been struggling to become. That way I can decide if “that” person is really who I want to be and if the goals will actually help me become them. Does that make sense? It’s no longer just tasks on a to do list.
What Is It For You?
What is it that you do where you feel like your ultimate self? What activity puts you in that state of flow we mentioned earlier where time stands still and you are able to accomplish anything? Are there certain people that trigger this for you? Is it something you can do whenever you want to or does it only happen every so often? Are you aware of that state while you’re in it or only AFTER you’ve passed out of it? I’d really like to know if you have to work to get into the state or if it just happens by itself with certain triggers? I’d love to hear from you so leave a comment below. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take a look at ways we can dependably put ourselves in this state whenever we need to. First, we need to look at what IS that state you so desire.
