One of the key misconceptions that I had been living with for most of my life is that entrepreneurs were somebody “else”. I don’t mean they all don’t share certain qualities either. I’m talking about honestly believing that people who built businesses from scratch were somehow genetically different from me and most of the people I knew.
Am I alone here? When somebody mentions the word entrepreneur to YOU, don’t you normally conjure up images of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Warren Buffet? If you do, don’t feel bad. That’s really the way the media wants you to think. In fact, the more different you feel from them the better their stories are. What I’m leading with here is that it’s really NOT all your fault if you’ve excluded yourself from the group known as entrepreneurs. But this blog is not about accepting whatever role you’ve accepted before. It’s about seeing the entrepreneur inside you and using them to start and build a successful business!
Let’s talk briefly about entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs. To be sure, he was a visionary, stubborn, often difficult leader. He also brought forth products that revolutionized the way we work, play and communicate. Nothing can be taken from him and his accomplishments. Even his harshest critics would have to admit the impact he had on this planet while he was on it.
The problem lies when people don’t acknowledge their full potential because they think they’re not Steve Jobs so why bother. Like unless you have that drive and insight you could NEVER make a go with your own business. So, they keep working at jobs they hate because that’s just what you do when you’re not Steve Jobs, right?
Don’t get me wrong…going into business for yourself is scary. There are ways to mitigate that by doing things like starting on the side so that you’ve got income coming in while you work on your side gig. But you’ll never get anywhere with it if you believe deep in your soul that you are not a person who can grow a successful business. It’s just not going to happen.
You Already Are An Entrepreneur
I’d like to shatter this myth once and for all. You have so many unique talents that could help people eat better, take more professional photographs or whatever it is you love to do and could teach somebody else to do better. You don’t need to wake up tomorrow and see you’ve become a different human. You just need to see the gifts that you have to offer and find a way to bring them to your audience.
I don’t mean to sound for a second like I believe it’s that easy. I’m just sketching the framework for work we need to do together. I want to help you identify your “it” and help you bring that message to the people who need it the most. That is where true success in life and business comes from.
