Being a “thoughts become things” kind of person, I’m understanding more and more how important it is for us be able to focus on an outcome we want before it happens. I also understand how incredibly hard it is for us. Most of us have been raised to believe once something exists in physical form, then, and only then, is it “real”. It wasn’t until the last three or four years of my life that I realized we’ve got it all backwards. Let me explain.
Most of us go through our lives trying to get “somewhere”. Whether it’s an accomplishment that’s very important to us like, say, becoming a lawyer or doctor or something slightly less tangible like being content with our lives. Either way, we are usually told to set a goal that is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Bound) and then just chug away at it until it comes to pass. As humans, we like this because it makes us seem more in control and that it’s something the WE do instead of something that happens to us which feels much less inspiring in some way. But is it, really?
I personally, since I’ve read and studied Trevor Blake’s Three Simple Steps, have seen things happen because I was very specific in how I envisioned something I wished to attain or have. My story of the War Horse is a perfect example but there have been many others since then. Before you write this off as a flight of “The Secret” type thinking where you basically (paraphrasing here) think of something you want and it comes to you, let me just say I don’t think that goes far enough. I do think it IS important to put yourself mentally in the place to achieve an outcome before it will come to pass. This is the subject of this post I will help you with from this point on.
What Is Mentally Practicing Success?
Without bogging you down with particulars or theory or whatever will stand in your way of doing this, let me tell you what I mean by mentally practicing success.
You have a goal, outcome, vision you want to have happen. You take a few minutes each day to put yourself in a relaxed state and just spend some time believing it’s already happened. This means you allow yourself to feel what it would be like to have that goal already behind you and allow the energy from this to sink back into you. Basically, you insert yourself into the future and let your mind and body feel the positive energy you get from having the goal behind you. This way, you’re communicating between your being and the Universe, God, The Source that you already believe you have this goal behind you. Then, you can allow it to make the transition from mental form to physical form. According to quantum mechanics, they are identical anyway.
Mentally Practicing Success: The Steps
- Pick a time each day to set aside 5-15 minutes to do this exercise.
- Get yourself into a calm and relaxed state of mind that is free of distractions and that allows you to focus clearly on your goal or outcome. You’ll find the Five Minute Mental Tune-Up very helpful for getting into this state.
- Think of the goal you are trying to achieve. Make sure it is specific.
- See that outcome as already having happened.
- Now, the fun part. What does it FEEL like to have it already happen? Do you feel a certain way? Proud? Relieved? Ecstatic? What?
- Spend a few minutes exploring different aspects of the emotion. How do you look? What is happening around you? Is there a taste associated with it? Is there a smell? Whatever it is, make a mental note of it, experience it and move on.
- Eventually, you will have experienced the goal and it will seem so real that you won’t be able to perceive a difference between how you feel and how you imagine you would feel if it had already come to pass.
- Each time you do this, you strengthen the connection between your goal and its achievement. This is very important because it allows your mind and body to fully accept the goal as reality.
- It may not happen in a day (though it could) or even a year but it will happen! Probably much sooner than you initially thought too!
Some Tips For Success With This
There is no limit of what you can achieve with this type of visualization but let me give you a few things that should help you with mentally practicing success.
You don’t have to limit the SIZE of the goal but you should be as specific as you can be in setting it. Don’t get me wrong. Most of the time, the Universe will fill in the details you hadn’t even thought of. This is the reason you spend most of your energy coming up with the goal itself and virtually NO TIME in the details of how it will happen. That is the part where you need to trust in the process. Trying to achieve a goal by setting it AND the steps needed to achieve it is counter productive. This is because the Universe has a way of sending you exactly what you ask for. If you try to control HOW it sends it, you’ll probably find it knows a LOT better than you ever could the how of the achievement. This could mean you’re sending out conflicting messages and that’s exactly what you’ll get back.
Garbage in, garbage out.
So, beware of and respect our all too human tendency to want to control everything. Suspend your natural impulses here because you are doing great work that doesn’t need you to do anything more than getting as clear as you can on an outcome. Then, just trust the process to work.
Speaking of getting clear on an outcome. I don’t mean be a stick in the mud about what that outcome will be either. This is another of the variables that the Universe will send you.
For instance, let’s say you set a goal of “making fifteen new business connections at the XYZ conference”. Nothing wrong with that, right? Not really. First of all, setting the number is nonsense because how do you know how many you need? Focusing on the XYZ conference might also be a mistake because it would be better for you to make connections at the ABC conference. Do you get what I’m saying here? Be open to the goal coming in both a different magnitude and method. Just be assured that you will “make meaningful connections at each conference I attend this year”. This way, you’re not dictating exactly what you want or limiting yourself in the form it will take.
